(This is Not) A Life of Jack Daniels & Microsoft Excel
August 28, 2005

When I was about 11, I had always wondered what it would have been to be 24 years old. How I came about that as the magical age is somewhat unclear, but there are some ideas:

1) At 24, you can rent cars, which is great when you're growing up in suburban Texas. It isn't surprising that when it came for me to pick a college, 7 of the 8 I applied to were cities with relatively ornate public transportation systems. Plus, walking without worrying that you'll get hit by a GMC truck is kind of nice.

2) At 24, you could enter all those cool clubs in Houston, the ones that are 18+ for girls and 24+ for guys because guys in general are hornier and cheaper and this is about the only way they could contain it. (It didn't help that 97.9 The Box, 102 Jamz and 104 KRBE loved to replay announcements for such parties, over and over, with Biggie's "Big Poppa" in the background.)

3) The number itself is quite gorgeous, divisible by 2, 4, 6, 8 as well as 12. (It can also be divided by 1 and 24, but theoretically cannot be divided by 0, that poor soul.) Moreover, it is endorsed by Jack Bauer.

But mostly, it was about being independent, liberated from the shackles of conformist education and having the ability to Choose Your Own Adventure™. Right now, I'm the Pollyanna-style of glad and optimistic about not being shackled to a life of settling.

I must say, this is a hopeful 24. Cheers everyone.
