Celebrate the Eighth Wonder
After 15 years of being a Houston Astros fan, it's finally happened: We're going to the World Series. And honestly, when it comes down to it, there is nobody in the world I'm more happy for than Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, who are arguably the two most loyal and diligent players in sports history. Other Houstonians will tell you: Being a fan of any sport there is tough: Heartbreaks are common, yet hope is everpresent. We've blown leads, performed miracles and become experts in tragedy. As the country's fourth largest city, we have only two championships (Rockets, 1992-1994) to our nameAnd that was overshadowed by the fact that those were the two seasons Michael Jordan was not in the league between the Bulls' three-peats. The Oilers didn't make the Super Bowl until they moved to Tennessee: And then lost by a yard (which ESPN called the 2nd greatest Super Bowl moment to date) to the Greatest Show on the Turf. If you want to talk college, University of Houston holds the record for what is considered one of the greatest upsets in sports history: Phi Slamma Jamma losing to Jimmy V's NC State in the NCAA Tourney back in 1983. (Luckily, I'm a Texas Longhorns fan. Unluckily, we've been one step away from the national championship for nearly five years now, and maybe, just maybe, this is our year.) This is a time of quiet enjoyment. We're here, the World Series, for the first time in the franchise's 44 year history. The Chicago White Sox, however, have been away for 46 years, and have not won a World Series since 1917 against the NY Giants. And as everyone knows, the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson will be looking down on these kids: Let's just hope he's angry enough to give us a helping hand. This is going to be one tough fight. « Film in the West: It's Here, Somewhere | Bringin' It Home Since '91 » well put Matt | October 20, 2005 12:45 AMwurd. touche, rahat, touche.
